The Power of God Within You

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

When I was younger, I wanted seven children. I know, that’s a lot. But, I came from a big family, the youngest of nine, and I wanted to have a big family like my Mom. But circumstances caused me to dwindle that number down to having two children instead. And I thank God immensely for blessing me with a daughter and a son and eight grandkids.

After having my daughter, by the time I had my son 16 months later, I had a little experience being a mother, plus a whole lot of experience babysitting my nieces and nephews. I had also been in an LVN program before having to drop out due to sickness while pregnant with my son. So, I felt pretty comfortable having had experience with babies.

I knew the routine- at two months old, my son would get his first set of vaccinations- DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus) vaccinations. I insisted that my son get his vaccinations separately so that if he had a reaction, I would know which vaccine caused it. The nurse went through the familiar drill, this vaccination can cause some irritation at the injection site and/or a fever, and some irritability. I asked her if that were it and she told me yes. So, I asked for the leaflet so I could read all of the adverse reactions for the pertussis vaccination, which is for whooping cough, for myself.

I received a bothersome stare from the nurse and was told in an annoyed voice that I was the only parent to ever ask for the insert. I actually didn’t read the inserts thoroughly when my daughter received her vaccinations but made it a point to read everything really well from that point on. I believe when you learn to do better, you should do better.

I took my time to read through the lengthy leaflet much to the dismay of the nurse. My eyes were particularly drawn to the part that stated the rare adverse reaction of the pertussis vaccine to cause temporary or permanent brain damage. I questioned the nurse about this as to why she didn’t inform me of that fact, even when I asked her of the most serious side effects. She just said that never happens. But for me, that wasn’t the point.

After reading through the insert, I allowed my son to get the vaccination, but decided to watch him closely for the first 24-48 hours after receiving the vaccination. However, I had to work that night on the night shift, so I watched him for the first 8 hours and his dad watched him when I went to work with specific instructions to call me if he had a fever, became irritable, or wouldn’t eat. I told him to call 911 and me if he became lethargic, was having difficulty breathing, which could sound a lot like cooing, or if he turned blue. I told him if any of the latter happened that I would leave work immediately and whoever got there first, between me and the ambulance, would rush him to the hospital.

I was apprehensive going to work but my son seemed to be doing well, so I cautiously went and started my shift. About 30 minutes into my shift, I was told there was a phone call for me at the desk from my husband. I rushed to the phone and before he could say anything, I could hear my son making the distinctive cooing like sounds indicative of difficulty breathing. HIs dad was trying to explain that he was making some cooing sounds, but I didn’t leave time for him to explain anything, I just said call 911 and I’m on my way.

I arrived before the ambulance and saw my son with labored breathing. I scooped up his flaccid little body and told his dad to drive as fast as he could to Children’s Hospital, which would take us about 5 minutes or less. I was holding him in my arms as my husband rushed to the hospital.

Shortly after we took off, my son turned blue and coded-he stopped breathing and had no pulse. His body went completely limp. I started CPR right away until we got to the hospital and the doctors and nurses took over. I could not believe what was happening.

I saw a team with too many doctors and nurses to count working hard to try and save my son. While I was watching what was going on, I was also answering questions about the events leading up to the change. I told them he had received the pertussis vaccine within 12 hours of the adverse reaction.

The team tried to stabilize my son, he had tubes in his little body and looked so helpless. He had lost all of his reflexes and things were not looking good. The lead doctor told me what I already knew, my son had suffered brain damage from the pertussis vaccine. The thing is he didn’t know if it was temporary or permanent brain damage or even if he would pull through the night. I was told that the doctors had done everything they could, the rest was out of their hands and that if my son pulled through the night, he had a chance of pulling through period.

Well they might have said it was out of their hands, but I had already been praying and seeking God and knew that my son’s life and health was in God's all-powerful, all capable, healing hands. I asked the whole team of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, maintenance, any and everyone who had come into my son’s room if they would join hands around his bed as I lead in prayer for him. And to my surprise they all did.

I prayed over my son and asked God to heal him. I spoke life into his body in the mighty name of Jesus. I claimed healing in the mighty name of Jesus. I claimed victory in the mighty name of Jesus. And I waited in expectation for God to heal him in the mighty name of Jesus.

I held my son’s little hand during the night and continued to lay hands on him, speaking life and healing over him. I called on the mighty name of Jesus and I had faith in God to completely heal him. I remembered all those times I heard my mother praying and how God always came through. I waited in faith for my son’s healing.

Before the crack of dawn, my heart leaped for joy when my son started making sucking motions and he wrapped his little hand around my finger. Yessss, Praise God! He had answered my prayer and healed my son!

All of my sons’ reflexes returned and within days we were headed home with his health fully restored. He had suffered temporary brain damage from the pertussis vaccine. But God, faithful to His word, had healed him. John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

God said that He would give us power to do great works. John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father. The problem is very few people actually access and exercise the power that God has given them.

In fact, God has given His children authority over a variety of situations and we need to speak to those situations with our God-given authority. Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

When you walk in the Spirit, the power of the Holy Spirit within you is what gives you the power. Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The Holy Spirit gives power to the words that you speak and to your hands in what you touch. You have power over things that are seen and unseen. God allows His power to flow to you and through you to other things, people, and situations to achieve His will. So, by faith and holy boldness exercise the divine power that God has placed within you. Watch God move by His Spirit and give Him all the glory in Jesus name.

Prayer:

Dear Father God,

Thank You Lord for the divine power that You have given me through Your Holy Spirit. Lord, I recognize that I don’t exercise the power you have given me as much as I should and could. I ask You Holy Spirit to please help me exercise this power more and more so that others can see Your wonder working power and give glory to Your name. And Lord I know it is through exercising my faith in You that I am able to exercise the power that You have given to me, so I ask that You also increase my faith. Help me to hear Your voice more clearly Lord and to move when You say move and to do what You say do. I love giving You glory and Lord I wait in expectation of all that You are going to do through me to achieve Your will.

In Jesus name I pray,

Amen
